Reminder: Homestead Exemption Deadline is on April 30th
This is a friendly reminder to file your Homestead Exemptions! The deadline is on April 30, 2023. You may file for the exemptions online through the county appraisal district's website.
Tax season is upon us, and we want to make sure you're aware of the benefits of filing for a Homestead Exemption on your property. An exemption removes part of the value of your property from taxation, which ultimately lowers your tax bill. And who doesn't want to save money on taxes?
To qualify for the online Homestead Exemption filing, you must have owned and occupied your property as of January 1st of the current tax year. This means that if you bought a home in 2022 or have never filed before, you should make sure to file your Homestead Exemption form by April 30th.
All residence homestead owners are allowed a $40,000 exemption from their home's value for school taxes. And, if you're 65 years or older or disabled, you may qualify for an additional $10,000 exemption. That's potentially $50,000 in exemptions that you could be missing out on!
Effective as of January 1, 2022, a buyer may file for a homestead exemption immediately after closing if the seller did not have a homestead exemption on the property for the current tax year. This means that if you recently bought a home, you could still be eligible for a Homestead Exemption. You may file for the exemption online through the county appraisal district's website.
